5 tips on having a sustainable summer

Let's get ready for a summer of sustainability! In today's blog, we're sharing 5 essential tips to help you have an eco-friendly summer without sacrificing the fun. From simple swaps to mindful choices, here is an easy guide for you to minimise your environmental impact whilst still enjoying this sunny season (well, that is slightly questionable with Hong Kong's current weather forecast…). Discover ways to reduce waste, conserve resources, and make eco-conscious decisions for your summer activities. Whether you're hitting the beach or enjoying outdoor barbecues, we've got the insights to help you make a positive difference for our planet AND make the most of summer.

Maximise on natural lights

There is no better reminder of summer than the additional daylight hours we get to make our days last a little longer. So why not maximise on that? Not only are these extra sunlight hours good for our health, but they can also be good to our environment (and our energy bills) if we opt for either spending more time outdoors during daylight, or only switching the lights on when we need it. Being more conscious of the natural resources we have will also make us more in tune with our outside world and encourage us to spend more time in nature to enjoy this season!

Visit your local farmers markets

We previously have shared what fruits and vegetables are in season this summer, so why not enjoy them fresh from the local farmers markets? Shopping locally and seasonally can reap so many advantages, including sweeter produce, less chemicals and lower food footprint. Have you been to the local farmers market that is held every weekend at the Star Ferry Pier in Central? Get inspired as well as you stroll through the markets for creative dishes you can make.

Ditch the disposable utensils and cutleries

There is nothing more wholesome than spending time outdoors with friends and/or family hosting barbecues or picnics. And you can easily enjoy these activities without having to cost the environment by bringing your own reusable utensils and cutleries. We agree that this requires a bit more organisation but after all, wouldn't it be ironic to be polluting the outdoors whilst we're having a great time amongst it? Let's be mindful of our actions this summer and switch the gears onto greener behaviour!

Be conscious of water usage

It is undeniable that the intensity of the heat coupled with the humidity in Hong Kong make it irresistible for wanting to cool down in cold waters (and the irony that spending just 2 minutes outside makes us feel/look like we have just taken one). It is almost impossible to not relate summer to water as hydration is key but so are pools, sea, cold plunges and showers, the list can go on. And with that in mind, we are here to give you a sustainable tip on being conscious in our water consumption habits. If showers are how you cool down and wash off the sweat, then stick to quick and effective ones in lower temperatures. Plus, did you know that cold showers are SO good for your health? Without getting off topic, try to be aware of how much water you are consuming as every drop counts!

Have a no spending day

Alright, maybe a slightly controversial and polarising one… but an important tip nonetheless! The rate of consumerism is on the rise and the summer sales are beyond tempting. However, we are encouraging you this season to minimise your shopping habits and opt for outdoor activities instead that won't cost you a dime. Think a morning hike then finish off at the beach, or spending the day at the park playing ball, or even having a day indoors to beat the heat and host a cute boardgames evening! Let's all try to resist splurging this season and save some cash at the same time, and instead prioritise activities that fill up your photo albums.
