5 ways to use up leftover cabbage

Cabbage is a secret weapon and ingredient in your kitchen. It is as versatile as your favourite pair of jeans or favourite Spotify playlist or even… rice (the list can go on honestly). Not only is it a powerhouse of health benefits, but it’s also a leftover wizard in your kitchen. The famous cabbage is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants - it helps boost your immune system and improve your digestion. What can’t the cabbage do? Well, very little. In fact, it is high in fibre and low on calories so it even keeps you full without weighing you down. Lastly, the cabbage is the guru of gut health. Containing high levels of probiotics, it supports a healthy digestive system.

Did we mention how incredible this vegetable is? And these are just some of the health benefits without us bombarding you with more!

In today's Tuesday Tips, we’re sharing with you ways to use up your leftover cabbage so it does not end up in your garbage (not our best rhyming game but we tried!).

A good staple vegetable to have in our households, here are 5 ways to use your leftover cabbage. Be prepared for the cultural diversity of dishes we have got lined up (we never realised how common it is of a vegetable until now)!:

Filling for dumplings

An honest favourite, Chinese cabbage dumplings. Filling you in on the next best week night recipe (apologies for the pun), follow this delicious recipe that is vegetarian and packed with flavours. Turn it into a dumpling party by having family or friends over to help prepare them! An additional tip, portion them into Tupperwares or silicone Ziploc bags, and freeze them. Simply boil them and pan-fry them before your next dumpling party.

Pancakes are easy to make

Originated from the streets of Osaka, the Okonomiyaki is a popular Japanese savoury pancake that literally translates to "grilled as you like it". Nothing more liberating when you're following a recipe that tells you to cook it the way you wish. Feel free to add any toppings of your desire; the most common toppings include cabbage, protein of your choice, pickled ginger and sauces like okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, the list goes on.

Cabbage rolls are goals

A healthier, low-carb tasty dish to make whenever the cravings call for a Chinese meal. Did you know in Chinese it's called a "Jade wrapped meat"? (Fei Cui Bao Rou 翡翠包肉), poetic AND descriptive. We absolutely love making this dish for a light week day dinner, it's simple yet satisfying. Just what the tastebuds ordered.

Kimchi as 1, 2, 3

A straightforward and easy kimchi recipe is all that we need. Eating fermented food has a lot of health benefits, in fact feel free to check out our popular Tuesday Tip blog on 5 reasons to ferment food here. Aside from the multiple benefits, just the delicious taste of kimchi is enough to learn how to make it yourself so you never have to buy it in store again. On top of that, it can be stored easily and over a long duration. Win!

Give the stir-fry a try

If you are ever in need of a quick and wholesome meal (and you have extra cabbage lying around), then this one is for you. A stir-fry is simple, yet delicious, and it's also extremely affordable. Feel free to exclude the meat from the recipe if you are vegetarian. We love making this recipe, and it can easily be served with noodles or rice depending on what carbs we have leftover. Truly a versatile dish.
