International Carrot Day!

We dedicate today’s Tuesday Tips blog post to one of our favourite vegetables. We decided to root for it because it is also its own special International Day today. And if you didn’t carrot all about your health, then you will think again after we share with you this vegetable’s many benefits. We introduce to you today, our very special guest, the carrot, Daucus carota.

It comes in many different colours; most notably known for its common orange appearance, the carrot can also be purple, white, red and yellow. Quite the rainbow, isn’t it? Such colourful feature is linked to the vegetable’s high content of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that your body converts into Vitamin A. This nutrient is vital for growth, development and immune function.

Previously, we have shared with you tips on how to use up carrot peels. Today, in honour of International Carrot Day, here are top 5 health benefits followed by our top 5 favourite carrot recipes.

Health benefits of the carrot

Maintains healthy skin: Carrots are one of the superfoods and amazing for your skin health. The rich antioxidant content of this vegetable means it can render your skin more resilient and heal quickly (especially if you have a sunburn). It even has the potential to hydrate and moisturise your skin.

Improves digestive health: Being a root vegetable, the carrot is very high in fibre. Adding bulk to your waste, it can help keep your digestive tract healthy and your bowel movements regular.

Regulates blood sugar levels: Although carrots contain sugar, it is a common misunderstanding that they can be bad for you, especially if you are diabetic. However, their sugar is easily assimilated which means your body can easily digest it. The carotenoids help with insulin resistance and can in fact lower your blood sugar levels.

Anti-aging benefits: Aside from working wonders on your skin, the beta-carotene in the carrots can actually slow down cell deterioration. This helps you look youthful for ages!

Helps prevent cancer: One of the biggest benefits of eating carrots; the high concentration of antioxidants help reduce the number of free radicals, making this vegetable exceptional for cancer prevention.
